Introduction
In high-power fiber laser processing, 3mm stainless steel is a "standard" thickness that many manufacturers handle daily. However, achieving a consistent, burr-free, and silver-bright edge remains a challenge for many operators. At Muxi Precision, we recently helped a client diagnose a persistent dross issue on their 3kW system. The solution wasn't more power—it was a strategic shift in process logic.
The Problem: Why "Standard" Focus Often Fails
Many operators stick to a shallow focus (near 0 or -1.0) when cutting 3mm sheets. While this provides speed, it often fails to distribute energy effectively through the entire depth of the kerf. This leads to:
• Incomplete melt ejection: Molten metal sticks to the bottom edge.
• Rough edge texture: The Nitrogen gas cannot "wash" the cut zone cleanly.
• High rework costs: Significant time spent on manual grinding.
The "Muxi" Technical Solution: Deepening the Focus
After analyzing the beam-material interaction, our engineering team recommended a specific adjustment.
The Key Change: Shifting Focus from -1.0 to -2.8.
By lowering the focal point deeper into the material, we widened the bottom of the kerf. This allows the high-pressure Nitrogen assist gas to couple more effectively with the molten material, flushing it out before it has a chance to cool and stick.
Optimized Parameters for 3mm Stainless Steel (3kW):
Parameter | Setting | Impact
Focus Position | -1.0 to -2.8 | Improves melt ejection & edge smoothness
Cutting Speed | 8 m/min | Reduces heat-affected zone (HAZ)
Nozzle Type | 2.0 / 2.5 Double Layer | Stabilizes gas flow curtain
Gas Pressure | 14 - 16 Bar (N2) | Ensures a clean, dross-free finish
Conclusion
In the world of precision manufacturing, small parameter shifts define the difference between a scrapped part and a masterpiece.
Stability is not just about the machine; it’s about the synergy between high-quality Optics and optimized process DNA.
